Give Your Car the Day Off: Hop on Your Bicycle and Ride

National Bike Month - get outdoors and ride

In celebration of National Bike Month, give your car the day off and hop on your bicycle instead. Your bike, believe it or not, is a great way to get around town. It’s not only an environmentally-friendly form of transportation, it’s a means of getting some exercise and fresh air all at the same time.

If you’re on the fence, here are five reasons you should start riding your bicycle on a regular basis:

1. Save money, as well as wear & tear

Swapping your car out for your bike can help you save money (on gas, repairs, basic maintenance, etc.), as well as routine wear and tear on your vehicle. If you decide to get rid of your vehicle entirely, you’ll save on car payments, too. But don’t fret if you’re not ready to go all in yet, even one day a week can make a difference.

2. Get more Exercise

Riding your bike is a great form of exercise. Not only does it assist with cardiovascular health, but cycling can help strengthen your lower body, improve balance, increase circulation and enhance joint mobility. What’s even better is cycling is not high-impact, so could be ideal for those with injuries or those just starting out.

3. Lower stress

Riding a bicycle is not only a good form of exercise, but it’s a simple way to lower stress. When you ride a bike, it helps lower your cortisol levels, while also giving you a neurochemical boost. This helps to improve your mood and reduce stress. The repetitive motion of the pedaling can almost have a meditative quality and the increase of oxygen to your brain is known to improve mental clarity.

4. Reduce Your environmental Impact

Opting for a bicycle, instead of a car, is an obvious way to reduce your environmental impact. No emissions, no gas consumption, no oil changes, no noise pollution and fewer natural resources used. Even those with electric vehicles can benefit from hoping on their bicycle. As, electric vehicles do have an environmental impact, so anything you can do to reduce your impact will only help.

5. Get outdoors

For those who don’t get to spend as much time in nature as they’d like, riding your bike can give you that opportunity. You can ride around town, ride to and from work or go for a longer ride through local hills and forests. You’ll be able to get some fresh air and feel the breeze as you race along. Should you choose to venture away from the concrete jungle, you’ll be able to reconnect with nature.

In Conclusion

Whether you swap out your regular method of transportation for your bicycle once a week, once a month or make it a permanent change, you’ll surely see the benefits racing in.

You can start by marking your calendar for Bike to Work Week 2026, which is May 11th-17th. National Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 15th. If you have kids, or you’re attending college, Bike to School Day is May 7th. If you miss any of those days, the entire month is National Bike Month.

Make the time and enjoy the ride!
