5 Biofriendly Halloween Tips

Fall is already upon us and believe it or not, Halloween is just around the corner. Where has the year gone? Can it really be a year since we were getting the kids into their costumes and ready for Halloween? Well, it looks like it…so in honor of Halloween, Halloween parties, Trick-or-Treating and everything ghostly, here are 5 biofriendly Halloween tips to help you get through the holiday:

1) Make Green Decorations: So many of us love to decorate our homes during the holidays and Halloween is no exception. Cobwebs, witches, pumpkins, ghosts or ghouls all make for a “scary” scene. If you don’t want to spend tons of money on decorations or would rather be a little more creative with the supplies you do have, you can always make your own decorations.

2) Green Your Candy Bowl: When you are looking for candy to have for your party guests or to hand out to trick-or-treaters, check out some greener options by going for fair-trade goodies. Don’t forget, you can also go for eco-friendly toys or goodies instead of candy.

3) DIY Halloween Costumes: Before you go out and spend good money on a costume that you may only wear once, why don’t you try and make your Halloween costume from stuff you have around the house? There are plenty of creative, one-of-a-kind costumes that can be dreamed up from the comfort of your own home. For example, take a look at these “Tetris” costumes made from old boxes…

4) Health Party Food Choices: If you are throwing a Halloween party or get together, you might want to have a few “new” food choices under your sleeve. Planet Green’s Green Wine Guide has a few great food (and wine) choices you’ll probably want to check out. They may be exactly what your party needs.

5) All About Eco-Friendly Candles: If you are looking for just the right ambiance or that special eerie glow that will really help put your party decorations over the top, remember to get eco-friendly candles. It’ll make things brighter in a “greener” shade of light.

A few other things parents should keep in mind: a) if your kids want to go trick-or-treating walk or ride bikes to the homes nearby, b) make sure your kids – younger ones especially – stay with or near you while they go from house to house, c) don’t let your kids eat any candy or goodies until after you have inspected them  and d) be careful when crossing the streets. If you don’t want to put reflective jackets on your kids, you can always put reflective tape on their Halloween bags and costumes to help make them easier to be seen in the dark.

Do you have any other biofriendly Halloween tips that you and your family practice? If so, I’d love to hear them. I hope you and yours have a fun, safe and biofriendly Halloween!

Awesome green holiday tips, as always. We are really into eco-friendly candles these days! And the kids are re-using costumes from past years/other friends.

    Happy Halloween! Stephanie
