Environmental watchword before, during and after an earthquake

Earthquakes in California are a fact of life…if you live in California you either have already experienced one (or many) or will experience one.  There’s no use fretting over when the next one will hit, if you make a plan and are prepared then you will get through it as best you can.  But will the environment fare as well?

I bring this up as Southern California recently held “The Great Southern California ShakeOut”, the largest earthquake preparedness activity in U.S. history.  This drill was designed to see what would potentially happen if there was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake along the San Andreas fault…and if we were prepared.  For more information on the drill and the results, click here.

In these times, the environmental watchword before, during and after an earthquake is not just “Be Prepared” but “Prepare Green”.

How do you prepare green for an earthquake?  Well, there are basic actions, which can be found at earthquakecountry.info, you can take before, during and after an earthquake to ensure the safety of you and your family in and around your home.

But remember, an earthquake causes enough damage, so don’t add to it by using non eco-friendly products in your emergency kit.  Stock up on biodegradable supplies (like food and toilet paper), get a water filter for your drinking water, get a solar-powered or hand-crank flashlight and/or radio rather than ones that require batteries, etc.  American Family Safety has some good items and kits available.

Since the new environmental watchword is prepare green, take the time to ensure you and your family will be safe and that your survival efforts will have no long-lasting effects on you or the environment.
