Biofriendlyblog’s Weekly Greens for March 4

Hard enough to believe, it’s that time of the week again. There are so many things happening week to week it’s not always easy to keep up with everything. So, at the end of the week I like to do a little roundup of a few of the biofriendly, green or environmental stories that caught my attention throughout the week. So here are my Weekly Greens for March 4th, 2011:

a) Cooling Your House Without Electricity: I thought this was a great idea! So often we get into the hot summer months and begin to melt due to the heat. It’s at that moment that the air conditioners tend to get turned on and the electric bill goes out the roof.  This sounds like a pretty reasonable alternative, don’t you think?

b) California Farmers Face Frightening Water Debt During Drought: Did you know that the farms in California make up around 8% of overall U.S. agricultural value? It seems like taking a look at dry farming, drip irrigation and sensors that tell when crops need to be watered (or even when water needs to be shut off).

c) Drinking Soda: Worse for the Environment than Bottled Water: Since we’re on the subject of water, I thought this particular post would be a good one to share. Let’s put it this way…if you drink soda, read this. For your own sake and the sake of the environment.

d) LightLane: The Bike Lane That Adapts to You: This was one of my personal favorites this week. How cool is it that no matter where you want to go bike riding at night, you will ALWAYS have a “bike lane” to help keep you safer? I think it is a very smart idea, one that could enable more bike riders and one that could save a lot of lives too.

e) Open Air Library in Germany Wins 2011 Brit Insurance Architecture Award: We need more of these types of buildings. How nice would it be to be able to go to the library (filled with donated aka recycled books), check one out any time, then go outside and read it under a clear blue sky? Sounds wonderful to me!

f) What can 28,000 rubber duckies lost at sea teach us about our oceans?: Okay, the title alone got me on this one. It’s amazing to think that rubber duckies lost over 20 years ago in the middle of the ocean are still showing up on shores all around the world.

g) Amazing Snapshots of Wildlife Caught on Camera Traps: This particular article I liked because sometimes you simply need to feel a little closer to wildlife and nature.

One final article to share this week, especially for all you parents out there. Be sure to take note that in a recent study shopping carts were found to be one of the dirtiest places in a grocery store. So remember to grab those disinfecting wipes or bring some green ones of your own the next time you go shopping.
