Climate change and global warming continue to pose a serious threat to humanity’s survival. Fortunately, green technology is helping slow down global warming’s impact. As more countries apply green technology into their processes, materials and manufacturing, green tech will change the landscape of different sectors from using electric vehicles like electric scooters to clean energy sources, such as solar panels and hydropower. Ultimately, it will make life cleaner, better and help restore the environment. Here are just some of the many changes the world can expect if more people apply green tech.

Reduce Carbon Emissions from Road Transportation

Transportation accounts for 23% of global carbon emissions. These include public and private vehicles, boats and planes. To reduce harmful gas emissions, more cities have been pushing for public and private electric vehicles like e-scooters, cars, buses and bikes. In fact, the UN Habitat launched the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI) which aims to increase electric vehicle use by 30% by 2030 and reduce carbon emissions to 30% by 2050.

These roads reduce plastic waste, eliminate the need for oil in making roads and create longer-lasting roads.

Sustainable packaging innovations help reduce the carbon footprint from various sectors, especially the trade industry. Eliminating the use of oil and petroleum from packaging materials and processes, then replacing them with plant-based or biodegradable materials and sustainable processes, will allow businesses to become greener. Contrary to the belief, switching to a greener economy results in job losses, a report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) says the green sector could create 24 million new jobs worldwide by 2030. A report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) says these jobs will come from wind energy production, solar photovoltaic industry and biofuels-related agriculture/industry.

According to the OECD report, green policies will transform the economy’s structure as it leans towards sustainable economic activities. This also includes changes in aggregate income and the macroeconomic environment. Although the overall effects of green policies are still uncertain, projections predict shifting to green policies will create more job opportunities than its losses.

Solve Food Shortage Through Vertical Farming

The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization reports there will only be a third of the land left from what was available in 1970. With the global population estimated to reach 9 billion by 2050, this raises the issue of food shortage. It also emphasizes a need for more food production. A green tech innovation that proves as a promising solution is vertical farming. It is a farming method geared towards stacking plants vertically, thus enabling farmers to plant more in a smaller space.

Vertical farming also reduces environmental footprints from the agricultural sector as it reduces the use of land, water, fertilizer and chemical. Moreover, it encourages farming near or within urban areas, enabling stores and consumers to get fresher produce. Reducing the land used for farming can give way to planting more forests and reducing more carbon dioxide. Although there can be significant expense involved in vertical farming, the economic and environmental benefits outweigh its costs.
